Benefits of Rowing as an Exercise

Hello There! Now that you’ve found me it’s because you are somewhat interested in rowing as a form of exercise.

Hello There! Now that you’ve found me it’s because you are somewhat interested in rowing as a form of exercise. Well, I am a rowing fanatic and I can tell you everything you need to know about how and why it is such a beneficial form of exercise. If you have arrived at my page, it could be due to either of the following reasons:

1.    You are setting up your home gym and wonder if a rowing machine would be a good addition

2.    You want to know about the benefits of rowing as an exercise

3.    You know you want a rowing machine and wonder which one you should buy

4.    You would like to buy a Concept2 or a WaterRower but still can't decide which one

In short, I can say yes, Getting a rower is a great idea!Rowing is the best form of exercise I have experienced. I am a fitness and sports fanatic who has just about tried every type of training program from running, swimming, cycling, weight lifting, yoga, pilates and even cross country skiing. For most workouts to be effective, you need a minimum of 45 to 60 minutes before your body starts to show results after consistently doing it for 2-3 months. However, with rowing, one needs less than 30 minutes to get the same level of workout intensity, completeness and results. This is mainly because rowing works every major muscle group except, perhaps, one's upper pectorals and front deltoids. A properly executed row works leg biceps, leg triceps, calves, buttocks, lower abs, upper abs, lower back, obliques, upper back (lats), neck (traps), rear shoulder (deltoids), outer deltoids, triceps, biceps, and forearms. It even hits the front deltoids and lower pectorals to some extent. I estimate that, in combination with a few sets of push-ups, a rowing workout hits every major muscle group given proper rowing technique. In addition, rowing is an amazingly effective aerobic/cardio workout.

As an alternative to rowing, if one would want to target all these muscle groups, one would have to do at least 1 to 1.5 hours of weight training and supplement it with a minimum of 30 minutes of intensive cardio workout to get the same results as with rowing alone. This will require about 2 hours in total. With just 30 minutes rowing, you can target all these muscle groups and get a challenging cardio workout and you save 1.5 hours!Rowing is hard work and if you are a beginner, just 10 minutes will make your muscles burn and get your heart beating fast*(*Disclaimer: However, please check with your doctor first before beginning any kind of exercise program). Especially, in a hot place like Dubai, where it is unbearable to workout outdoors for about 3 months in a year, rowing at home is an ideal form of exercise and if you combine it with some push ups and abdominal exercises, you get a complete workout in 30-40 minutes!

Now, if you have decided you want to buy a rowing machine for your home gym, I can only recommend two brands, WaterRower or Concept2. There are many other cheaper rowers on the market but I will not recommend them because you get what you pay for! If you want durability, performance, aesthetics, good ergonomics, customer support, then these two brands are the only ones to consider. My personal preference would be for the WaterRower and I have rowed at least 5000 km on both rowers to really know the difference between the two. Both rowers are available in Dubai and from my personal experience, I have dealt with the WaterRower agent in Dubai when I bought mine and their customer service was great. My next article will discuss the differences between Waterrower and Concept2…
